Spinal fusion, or spondylodesis, is surgery to permanently join together two or more vertebrae in the spine to restrict movement. Autologous, allogenic, or synthetic bone graft can be used to replace the intervertebral disc between the vertebrae and promote bone growth. Today, spondylodesis with autologous tricortical graft is a standard procedure in many clinics. Since the size of the graft is a crucial and delicate factor, the client asks for an expanding interbody bone graft. The bone graft would ideally be inserted in a collapsed form and then expanded to fill the disk interspace through the use of a balloon-like device filled with bone graft material. It would be composed of a biomaterial that allows for bone fusion, but is also strong enough to support the biomechanical forces of the spine as healing occurs.
