Peritoneal dialysis is a common treatment that uses the peritoneum, a lining inside the abdomen, to remove waste products from an individual’s blood stream after suffering renal failure. The standard method to prevent peritonitis, an inflammation of the peritoneum due to a bacterial or fungal infection, for patients receiving peritoneal dialysis requires individuals to visually inspect trace amounts of effluent as it travels through the exit tube. Patients examine the fluid for changes in transparency that can result from infection. To prevent late infection detection, the team has been tasked to develop a device that can detect the relative amount of white blood cells present in dialysis waste fluid, down to 100 cells/µL using an optical approach.
