A common method of delivering drugs to the brain involves inserting a catheter and ejecting the drug, laden fluids. Often times this results in some of the medicine flowing backward through the microtears created during insertion. The goal of the design team is to design a catheter that mitigates this backwards flow using an expandable biomaterial coating. The guiding tenants for the new design are as follows: The new catheter must be MRI compatible, must contain FDA approved biocompatible material, be non-toxic, sterilizable using autoclaving, and accurate to 2mm. Complimenting the team design requirements, the client, Dr. Oakes, has requested that the catheter be manufacturable, optimize material utilization, and be testable on cadavers. The ultimate goal of this design process is to select compatible materials and test different methods to determine if our ideas are feasible. .
