Project Overview
N95 respiratory protection devices have been in high demand ever since the COVID-19 pandemic. They form a great seal around the wearer's mouth and nose and are great at filtering out small particles such as airborne pathogens. However, current N95 respirators come with many drawbacks. They are stiff, scratchy, single use, and cause a miserable breathing environment for the wearer.
The objective of this project is to remove or at least reduce these drawbacks by improving the comfort and wearability of the N95 mask. More specifically, the team is to develop a mask holder capable of using the N95 mask as the filter. This mask is to be constructed out of a soft material, such as silicone, or out of plastic with a soft silicone/foam perimeter that makes contact with the wearer's face. Completion of this project will hopefully improve the quality of life for caregivers/ those who have the highest risk of getting the virus.
