Project Overview

Many individuals seeking aid from emergency departments in the United States, do so due to some form of a hand injury. These injuries are commonly treated with local anesthesia and can be operated on in the Emergency Room (ER) bedside table. Due to the patient's awareness during surgery, they often subconsciously move their arm in anticipation of the pain they expect to feel. The client, Dr. Nicholas Albano, has tasked the team to create a device that serves as a visual barrier for patients during hand surgery with an integrated operational surface to perform the procedure and a desensitization component. The client also requested the device be compatible with the Stryker-Tru fit bedside table. There are no current designs on the market that encompasses all these components. The team fabricated a universal mounting plate (UMP), which attaches to the bedside table using adjustable straps, and a rectangular board that mounts to the UMP to serve as a visual barrier. The prototype was tested using a visual field assessment, a simulated stability analysis, and ease of use test. The ease of use test revealed that the prototype had a significant decrease in time needed for assembly with more familiarity of the device. All speed times were less than 3 minutes. The stability analysis found the design exceeding all expectations for level of securement. The visual field test proved our device to be an improvement from the current state, however, the testing protocol has room for refinement for more accurate results in the future.
