Balloon Dilation Device for Nasopharyngeal Stenosis

Develop a low-cost inflatable device that is implanted in cats and dogs to treat Nasopharyngeal Stenosis.

Project Overview

Nasopharyngeal Stenosis is a medical condition in which tissue forms in the nasopharynx and interferes with an animal's ability to breathe. Currently, the treatment involves balloon dilation to mediate the stenosis, followed by a permanent tube used as a stent to hold open the nasopharynx. Difficulties arise with stent placement such as movement of the stent which causes nasal irritation, swallowing difficulties, and formation of fistulas. It has been discovered that repeated balloon dilation is the most effective treatment to combat Nasopharyngeal Stenosis. The balloon dilation device will be permanently inserted into the animal’s nasopharynx and secured to the inside of the animal to prevent movement of the device. The device will be inflated by the pet owners 1-2 times a day with a precise amount of volume recommended by a doctor. This inflation process will open up the nasopharynx by stretching the scar tissue that narrows the pathway of the nasopharynx. The goal of this project is to develop a permanent balloon dilation device for cats and dogs that can be inflated by their owners at home. Furthermore, treatment for Nasopharyngeal Stenosis is highly expensive, especially with customized stents and repeated separate balloon dilation treatments. With this new device, pet owners can administer balloon dilation treatment at a reduced overall cost at home.
