Problem Statement:
Peripheral nerve stimulators (PNS) are commonly used by anesthesiologists and ICU personnel to measure the amount of temporary muscle paralysis produced by certain drugs during general anesthesia. It is critical that the PNS devices are functioning correctly in order that the appropriate dosage of paralyzing drugs are administered. PNS monitoring during neuromuscular blocking agent administration results in the use of less medication, which can allow for quicker recovery of spontaneous ventilation and accelerated neuromuscular transmission recovery when the paralyzing drug is discontinued. However, these devices are subject to daily physical abuse and often malfunction. However, it is not readily apparent that they are not working. Our team will design a small, simple tester that will attach to the PNS electrodes to indicate if the PNS device is working correctly. It will confirm stimulator outputs of 20, 40, 60, and 80 mA with an appropriate LED response. No lights will indicate that the PNS device is not working.
