Project Overview
The development of telehealth in modern medicine is an emerging form of care that allows for long distance patient and clinician contact, care, education and monitoring with remote administration. Occupational Therapy is a discipline that depends on a patient’s ability to correctly execute a multitude of exercises to recover, develop, or maintain meaningful abilities. A common application in these therapies is yoga; however, patients may not always be knowledgeable on the correct form, and may not always be committed to completing their prescribed exercises. To ensure a safe and accurate home practice of yoga for Occupational Therapy, an advanced pressure distribution sensing yoga mat and corresponding computer software analyses will be developed. A telehealth system application will also be incorporated into this project, that will provide patients access to videos and other critical information about their exercises, all uploaded and controlled by the physician remotely. This telehealth application is being developed by the clients and other contracting companies. The physical mat will sense and record the pressure distribution created by a patient as they use a mat, and this information will be directly communicated to the software of the application. The system will improve patient access to therapy as well as accountability for the completion of the activities, thereby improving physician directed care.
