Project Overview
The use of breathing exercises is often prescribed to patients who suffer from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, and other disorders. In addition to therapeutic benefits, breathing exercises are used in stress management programs. However, learning the skill of abdominal breathing, let alone more difficult breathing techniques used in Zen meditation, can be difficult. Using biofeedback devices to teach abdominal breathing has proven useful; however, the current laboratory equipment used is expensive, cumbersome, and doesn't allow users to track their progress. The goal of this project is to develop and improve upon a prototype of a digital, biofeedback device used to teach abdominal breathing techniques. The device must be inexpensive, comfortable for any user, and it must offer intuitive and effective biofeedback.
